Saint Ignatius of Antioch

The Martyrdom of Saint Ignatius of Antioch

Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch,
bishop, martyr

Pray the Scriptures for this day. Click HERE, then scroll down and click on today’s date, for a video reflection. Open your heart to the Gospel with lectio divina.

Saint Ignatius was the first to call us “Catholics.” Learn about him in this video. He wrote seven letters to various churches as he was taken from Antioch to Rome to be martyred. See his writings.

Ignatius was torn apart by lions in the Circus Maximus for not denouncing his faith. He writes the Christians in Rome not to try to stop his martyrdom: “The only thing I ask of you is to allow me to offer the libation of my blood to God. I am the wheat of the Lord; may I be ground by the teeth of the beasts to become the immaculate bread of Christ.” Read more.

Send an e-card. Bake a lion cake or pretzels! Find recipes, activities and prayers for Saint Ignatius’ Day.
