Saint Martin of Tours

November 11

Saint Martin of Tours, bishop

Saint Martin of Tours, bishop /
Veterans Day

Pray the Scriptures for this memorial. For a video reflection, click HERE, then scroll down and click on today’s date. Meditate on the Gospel prayerfully with lectio divina.

Saint Martin was a soldier, and today we remember our military veterans as we mark the end of the Great War, World War I. Join in a Prayer for Veterans.

Today is Martinmas Day, so cook a fat goose!  Light up the streets with the children of Germany. Enjoy a Saint Martin song.

Read the legend of Saint Martin’s  meeting with the poor beggar, depicted above. Go through your closet and purge your wardrobe of unnecessary or surplus items and donate them to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Learn more about El Greco’s famous image of Saint Martin and the Beggar.

This is a day to remember the words of Saint Basil the Great:  “When someone steals another’s clothes, we call them a thief. Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.”

Send an e-card. Make Martinmas Lanterns. Read why Saint Martin’s symbol is the goose. Cook a special dinner of roast goose or duck in honor of Saint Martin. Bake some horseshoe cookies. See more recipes, activities and information about Saint Martin’s Day and Veterans Day. Print a Saint Martin coloring page.

Saint Martin is patron saint of wine growers and wine makers. In Italy and France, the tasting of the new wine is done today. Have a Martinmas gathering, serving this year’s wines.
