He always retained his simple outlook and sense of humor. His feast day, October 11, is the anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, known popularly as Vatican II. Saint John XXIII’s feast in the Roman calendar is on the date of the opening of Vatican II. This underlines the importance of the Council he called. Saints are usually commemorated on the day of their death. Good Pope John is remembered on the date of his death, June 3, on the calendar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and on the next day, June 4, by the Anglican Church of Canada and the Episcopal Church (United States).
