The feast has been celebrated under various names (Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption) from at least the fifth or sixth century. See more.

The Mother of God treads on the serpent, because her Son has conquered the power of evil. All creation rejoices in Mary’s Assumption. On this feast (called Dormition of the Theotokos in the Eastern churches), on the Greek Island of Kephalonia, snakes come to church to venerate the holy icons of God’s Mother.

From all over Poland pilgrims walk the Assumption pilgrimage to venerate the Black Madonna of Częstochowa. Closer to home, Little Italy in Cleveland, Ohio, hosts a four-day Assumption feast, beginning with a sacred procession and ending with fireworks. Croatian Americans in San Pedro, California, celebrate with a traditional procession. The faithful move solemnly through the streets of Paris, France, ending at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, before a solemn celebration of Holy Mass.
