Commentary, history, reflections for Mass

Entrance Antiphon
We should glory in the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection,
through him we are saved and delivered.
Cf. Galatians 6: 14

Hymn for this Day: Glory in the Cross

Communion Antiphon
When I am lifted up from the earth,
I will draw everyone to myself, says the Lord.
John 12: 32

Today’s feast commemorates the finding of the True Cross of Christ by Saint Helena, mother of Constantine, the first Christian emperor. At Saint Jude Church, we venerate the Holy Cross at the end of each Mass on this feast. We come forward to kiss or touch the holy wood, or to bow or genuflect before the sign of our redemption.

Our cross was crafted of oak by two parishioners. The corpus, the figure of Christ, is by a local artist commissioned by the parish. Below the feet of Jesus there is a glass reliquary containing a piece of the True Cross.

As we venerate, we respond “Adoramus te, Christe” to verses of Tree of Life.

Listen to Come, Sweet Cross.
