NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD was written in German as Nun danket alle Gott by Martin Rinkart, 1586-1649, as a set of “brief table prayers.” Based on Sirach 50:20-25, verse one focuses on thanksgiving, verse two on prayer for human needs, verse three on praise.
Rinkart was a degreed musician and a pastor. In 1617 the town council of Eilenburg called him to be their archdeacon. He remained there during the Thirty Years’ War, when many people from the countryside fled to the walled city. There was overcrowding, disease and hunger. Rinkart at times conducted forty or fifty burials in a day. His wife, too, died.
Johann Crüger, 1598-1662, wrote the tune to fit Rinkart’s text.

Listen to John Rutter’s lovely choral setting of For the Beauty of the Earth.

POPE FRANCIS: “Jesus does not ask us to preserve his grace in a safe.
