Listen to a song with animation of today’s parable of the tenants in the vineyard.

Today’s Gospel is a continuation of the the Parables of Jesus we have heard for several weeks. Listen to the Parable Song for a sense of how they all fit together in our lives.

HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION
This anonymous hymn text dates to John Rippon’s A Selection of Hymns, 1787. Rippon was an English Baptist minister who compiled thousands of hymns in two major collections. In much of this hymn, we do not address God, but God addresses us. The author was inspired by 2 Peter 1:4, and the final line is from Hebrews 13:5.
The tune, FOUNDATION, appeared in Joseph Funk’s Compilation of Genuine Church Music (Winchester, Va., 1832). It was printed one year after NEW BRITAIN, the tune of “Amazing Grace,” and in the same town. Funk, the publisher, of FOUNDATION, was born in eastern Pennsylvania in 1778, but moved with his family to the Shenandoah Valley in 1780.
This is the hymn as we know it. Here’s a relaxed version of How Firm a Foundation. Enjoy a delightful interpretation of this American hymn tune. Listen to a contemporary Italian organ composer’s treatment of the tune FOUNDATION.
