Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Why are we learning this setting?  [ Return to Top of Page]

"Each worshiping community in the United States, including all age groups and all ethnic groups, should, at a minimum, learn Kyrie XVI, Sanctus XVIII  and Agnus Dei XVIII, all of which are typically included in congregational worship aids. More difficult chants, such as Gloria VIII and settings of the Credo and Pater Noster, might be learned after the easier chants have been mastered." (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sing to the Lord 75)

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has actually singled out three particular chants that we should all know “at a minimum”. The parish community of St. Jude Catholic Church already knows the setting for Kyrie XVI. The parish sings Agnus Dei XVIII during Lent (as well as other times such as November), and also sings an adaptation of the tune to Sanctus XVIII during Lent.  Learning the original Latin setting of the Sanctus not only meets the directives of the U.S. bishops, but can be used once the new Order of Mass takes effect. Many in the parish have been singing the tune to this setting their entire lives!
